Biography of Zhang Peili
Born in 1957 in Hangzhou, China. Lives and works in Hangzhou.
Education
In 1984 he obtained his BA in oil painting from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Today he remains one of China's foremost video artists and has been shown in galleries throughout the world.
Zhang Peili is undeniably a pioneer of Chinese video art and one of its most important representatives till this day. In 1984 he graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Zhejiang Art Academy (present Chinese Art Academy).
Influences
His works were presented in New York's P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, in Kunsthalle Hamburg, at 45th and 48th Biennial of Venice, at the 3rd Triennial Asian Contemporary Art at the 11th Biennale of Sydney, and 4th Triennial of Guangzhou.
Zhang Peili lives at present in Hangzhou as director of the New Media Art Department of the Chinese Art Academy. In his early works like "Nc Jazz Tonight" (1987) and his "Emulsion Glove" (1988) series he proved very early to be an excellent master of painting displaying that he is surpassing the media and controlling the spirit's dynamic, entrusting his structures with an unusual sensitive degree of the intrinsic plot of intense visual images.
"Nowadays no other media are more popular and common than video. You can consider it as anything sculpture, a painting, or an installation. You can also regard it as a moment of your life or a fragment of your dreams."
